About A Boy

Posted on by WMYFC

At first glance, Ben is a normal 8th grade boy. He spends his weekends on his snowboard and occupies his school week with sports and friends. Here's what most don't know.

Ben is completely torn up inside. His father was sentenced to prison, leaving Ben spending the majority of his teenage years without a dad by his side to watch him at his games, teach him new tricks on his board, and to offer him advice. Since his dad's incident, Ben has been getting into trouble at school and has been heading in a downward spiral.

Ben has been attending Campus Life Club on and off for 3 years, and has not once opened up about anything. His leader has consistently pursued him and has been the male role model that Ben desperately needs. He takes him snowboarding and goes to his games to cheer him on. But no matter how persistent his leader was (and is), Ben was closed up emotionally and spiritually.

One night at Club, we asked the kids to be honest with themselves and write down what was really going on inside of them. Afterwards, Ben's leader dropped him off at home after Club and asked Ben if he would like to share what he wrote down on his card. Ben refused and got out of the car. Something happened in that moment. Ben stood there, outside of the car, and then tossed his card into the passenger seat. He shut the door and walked off. He had had enough. He finally decided to let someone in.

Ben's card was heart wrenching. He finally had the courage to open up about the pain he was feeling inside and how confused he was about life and God.

Ben's life has not gotten any easier since, but a brick wall was torn down that night. Three years of being bottled up finally was demolished. Pray for Ben and his leader as they continue on this journey together.

Looking for Interns

We are excited to tell you about the internship program at West Michigan Youth for Christ. Each year we select multiple candidates to join our team for a 9 month long internship. The program has encouraged individuals by providing excellent training and experience. Interns work on local campuses with a staff member and volunteers to reach out to lost kids and learn what it takes to be a ministry director.

Check out this Intern Video to learn more!

We are currently accepting applications until May and need your help! Would you be willing to share this with your ministry contacts or students/volunteers who might be interested? By spreading the word, we can be sure that everyone has the opportunity to hear about this great ministry!

Prayer and Praise

  • Several WMYFC staff members just returned from a week-long training at the YFC Headquarters in Denver. Please pray they will be able to apply what they learned to their ministry sites.
  • Praise God for two new staff members, Barry Dykstra (Byron Center Campus Life) and Teddy Davis (East Kentwood Campus Life)! Pray for them as they build ministry on each of their campuses.
  • We hope to take 175 students/leaders to YFC Camp this summer. Please pray for kids as they begin to sign up and for the funds needed to come in. To provide a scholarship for kids to attend who cannot afford Camp, click here.
  • Please pray for this time of year as students begin to turn the corner spiritually. Pray for our leaders as they engage in deeper conversations with students, both in one on one and group settings.
  • Pray for "Ben" as he continues to peel back the layers of hurt and pain he is experiencing. Praise God with us that he took the first step!
  • Pray for those God calls to be interns with WMYFC for the 2015-16 program
